While it would be impossible for us to keep every single rescue that we get in here, since our space would fill to capacity very quickly, we are very selective about who we adopt our adoptable rescues to.  Our adoption policies are very simple, but very stringent.  We want both the new owner and the animal to be happy.  Adoption is a big responsibility and we hope that any potential adopter will feel this way as well.

Remember these animals are rescues, which means they very often have come from abusive or neglectful situations.  We want the rest of their lives to make up for what has come before.  First and foremost, we will only let animals go to loving, caring forever homes where they will get the attention and care that they deserve.  This means you can expect to be asked a LOT of questions prior to any adoption.

One very stringent policy of our is that people KNOW THE SPECIES for which they are inquiring!  We get many people who ask us about adopting species that they have not done any research on at all.  Because these are rescues, and all exotic species, people are required to know the basics of the species and the care they need!

We also do require an adoption fee on all of our animals.  This is for two reasons; 1. to help cover the cost of our rescue bills (though the fees will never actually cover those) and 2. to show that you are really dedicated to the animal which you are adopting.

We require three steps in any adoption:

  1. Fill out an adoption agreement which answers most of the questions we may have.  If the answers to this create more questions, those may be asked later through either email or via a phone call.

  2. Have a signature form signed by a vet stating that they are willing and able to work with the species you intend to adopt should the need ever arise.

  3. Schedule a home study visit.  We must see the environment in which the animal is going to live.  During this visit, if there are other pets in the home, you may be asked to show records proving that you provide basic veterinary care for your pets (i.e. vaccination records on dogs or cats).

While we do our best to ensure each animal is healthy before it is allowed to leave here, these are rescue animals, and as such may not have been given a proper diet or environment in their early lives, which could lead to unforeseen problems later in life, every person who cares for pets must be prepared for accidents or illnesses.  This means that each adoptive home should have a knowledgeable vet lined up, and be willing to pay a vet in the event it is needed.

We try to get to know the personality of each animal that comes in to our rescue.  In doing this, we can tell you as much as possible about the personality of the animal, to help you to make an informed decision about adopting.  Remember though, these are rescues, which means they may have issues with people, depending on their past situation.  Some of them will require much more time, love and understanding before you earn their trust, and trying to push that issue could only make things worse for you and them.  We will do our best to inform you of any issues we can foresee.

While we have children, and believe pets are wonderful for children and that children can be wonderful for pets, we also believe that every pet is ultimately the responsibility of the parents.  Many exotic pets, especially those with "rescue issues" actually cannot be adopted to homes with children at all.  This situation will have to be handled on a case by case basis.  If it is deemed that it is safe for an animal to live in a home which has children, it will be expected that the parents will be the responsible party and, as such, will be expected to research and understand the needs of the species.

Of course, we are always here for questions and help after an adoption takes place.  We also would like to be kept updated on how the animals are doing once they leave here.  We put a lot of our hearts into these animals, so it is wonderful to hear from time to time how they are doing in their new homes.
