Mink

.

Mink Montage

These are pictures of both Slinkie and Skittles

These mink were found and rehabilitated in South Carolina and were in need of a home.  We think they will make a great addition to our educational program, once they have settled in and gotten to know us.

Mink have partially webbed feet to help them swim and dive.  Watching them reminds us very much of otter.

In The Wild

Classification:

Mustela Vison - a semi-aquatic member of the weasel (Mustelid) family

Native Region:

Northern North America, though they can be found throughout the US.

Diet:

Obligate Carnivores, meaning they can ONLY eat meat.  Their main food is muskrats, voles, cottontails, fish and crawfish.  They can kill something five times their size.

Behavior:

Crepuscular, awake at dawn and dusk.

Social Structure:

Solitary and territorial

Interesting Facts:

Mink are the most commercially valuable of the fur-bearing species.

In Wisconsin alone, in 2004, 768,000 pelts were produced to make coats and other fur clothing for humans.

Mink are excellent swimmers and can dive up to 16 feet down.

If you see one:

Leave it alone and it will leave you alone.  Seeing a mink in the wild would be very rare, as they are very good at not being seen.
