Unlike many rehabilitation facilities, CLAWS rehabilitates just about every animal that it is legal to rehabilitate in the state, and those that we cannot, we can help to transport. We are one of very few rehabilitators allowed to rehabilitate deer. CLAWS has 3 licensed wildlife rehabilitators on site and 4 other licensed rehabilitators as well as several veterinarians available to help when needed. CLAWS, Inc. is now accepting apprentices for people who wish to learn to rehabilitate small mammals. Please email mrsclaws@nc-claws.org if you are interested in taking these classes. 2008 has started off GREAT, with two successful releases in one day, 4 opossums and one red-tailed hawk!!! The purpose of rehabilitation is to take in animals that are sick, orphaned or injured, nurse them back to health, grow them up so that they can take care of themselves happily back in the wild where they belong. Part of doing this work is allowing their natural fear of humans to develop. For this reason, each animal in rehabilitation only interacts with one to two humans during their stay. For those who have sent us animals for rehabilitation. Unfortunately, we are too busy caring for the animals to remember to call and give periodic updates, but you are welcome to email us and ask about the animals. We will gladly keep you updated in this fashion.
We are grateful to touch a small part of these wonderful creatures lives - and we grow to love each and every one of them. With each animal, there comes a time when our job is complete and it is time to let them go and live the life they were born to live, wild and free. While each release is bittersweet, we rejoice in the hard road we've traveled together knowing that we've helped in some small way. Yet, as we release each darling, we release a piece of our hearts with each one of these babies that we've grown to love so much. These pictures are a memorial to the special relationship with these sweet, yet sometimes challenging animals. |
