CLAWS has 3 licensed wildlife rehabilitators on site and 4 other licensed rehabilitators available to help when needed.  The purpose of rehabilitation is to take in animals that are sick, orphaned or injured, nurse them back to health, grow them up so that they can take care of themselves happily back in the wild where they belong.  Part of doing this work is allowing their natural fear of humans to develop.  For this reason, we have as few humans interact with each animal as possible.  We are licensed to rehabilitate all animals that are legal to rehabilitate in the state of North Carolina except water fowl.  We are one of very few rehabilitators allowed to rehabilitate deer.

CLAWS, Inc.  will be holding rehabilitation classes in the fall of 2007 for those interested in helping wildlife on their own.  Please email mrsclaws@nc-claws.org if you are interested in taking these classes.

These pictures only account for a small portion of the animals we have taken in and cared for this year.

39 Fawn so far this year

As with most rehabilitators, the majority of care, including most critical care is done here by us to reduce contact with other humans, however, for more major injuries which require specialized equipment, we have a licensed veterinarian on our board who has 15 years of experience with wild, exotic and domestic animals who provides any care necessary.  The cost of rehabilitation is not small, if you would like to help out these animals in need, please consider making a donation toward their care.

CLAWS, Inc. is never closed.  We are available to help animals and up and feeding them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  We have found that animals in need do not tend to schedule their needs, so our schedule is made by them.

We are very pleased to announce that our overall success rate in the 2007 rehab season was 84.2% and 77% with the fawn.  Given that we have heard that a normal success rate is 55%, we figure we are doing pretty well.  We successfully released 30 healthy deer and many, many other animals of varying species.

So far in 2007, we have taken in 174 animals to rehabilitate.  Many have already been successfully released, healthy and happy, back into the wild, as nature intended!

In addition to the animals that we rehabilitate here, ourselves, we are also apprenticing several rehabilitators in North Carolina, two in South Carolina for fawn, one in Florida for fawn, one in Arizona for elk, two in New York for Raccoons (which are not legal in NC), one in Pennsylvania for raccoons, one in Oregon for fawn, one in Missouri for fawn and one in Kentucky for fawn.

It is important to us to help animals, no matter where they are!

We are grateful to touch a small part of these wonderful creatures lives - and we grow to love each and every one of them.  With each animal, there comes a time when our job is complete and it is time to let them go and live the life they were born to live, wild and free.  While each release is bittersweet, we rejoice in the hard road we've traveled together knowing that we've helped in some small way.  Yet, as we release each darling, we release a piece of our hearts with each one of these babies that we've grown to love so much.

These pictures are a memorial to the special relationship with these sweet, yet sometimes challenging animals.
