Doing rescue and rehabilitation work is often very sad. Animals come in sick or injured and some just cannot be saved. Many times the most humane thing to do for the animal is to euthanize him or her to end their suffering. We try to be with every animal in the end of their life. As sad as this is for us, we feel that, if the animal is not afraid of people, it is better to pass away being held then to die cold and alone. Our philosophy is that our "job" is to help each animal to the next phase of their life, and sometimes that phase is unfortunately death, where there is no more pain and suffering. This is, of course, the most sad part of our job. I personally do cry with each animal that has to be euthanized or dies due to illness or injury. I am asked often why I continue to do this if it makes me so sad. My feeling is that, when I stop crying, I will stop doing this, because to me, that will mean I have lost my heart. We first read this poem in our vet's office and dedicate it here to each and every animal we have had to help to leave this world. Tribute to a Beloved Pet
If it should be that I grow weak And pain should keep me from my sleep Then you must do what must be done For this last battle cannot be won
You will be sad, I understand Don't let your grief then stay your hand. For this day more than all the rest Your love for me must stand the test. You'd not want me to suffer so The time has come, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend And please stay with me until the end. Hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see The kindness that you did for me. Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve it must be you Who had this painful thing to do. We've been so close, we two, Don't let your heart hold back it's tears. This is the time for joy, not fears. Author Unknown |
